Cooling decision guide
Should you repair or replace a window air conditioner?
Cleaning, drainage and a replaceable control may justify repair. Refrigerant-system work, corrosion or a unit that is poorly sized for the room can make replacement the more useful path.
Repair or replace
Compare five-year ownership costs instead of looking only at today’s repair quote.
If the estimated remaining life is under five years, the keep-and-repair scenario includes a later replacement during the comparison window.
What changes the answer?
Rule out maintenance before pricing a repair
A dirty filter, blocked coil, poor window seal or drainage problem can reduce cooling without a major component failure. Use the diagnosis after basic maintenance has been checked.
Size the replacement for the room
An oversized unit can cool quickly without removing enough humidity, while an undersized unit may run continuously. A replacement comparison only works when the proposed unit fits the actual room load.
Include the full seasonal energy difference
Use operating hours from your climate and schedule. The EnergyGuide estimate is a comparison aid, but your local rate and runtime determine the dollar savings in this calculator.
Use this result as a planning range
Do not open a sealed refrigerant system or operate a unit with damaged wiring, a hot plug, unstable mounting or uncontrolled water leakage.
