Appliance decision guide

Should you repair or replace a dishwasher?

A pump, latch or inlet valve repair may be economical when the tub and racks are sound. Repeated leaks, control failures or a damaged tub can change the five-year comparison.

Repair or replace

Compare five-year ownership costs instead of looking only at today’s repair quote.

If the estimated remaining life is under five years, the keep-and-repair scenario includes a later replacement during the comparison window.

What changes the answer?

Treat water damage risk separately

A small projected cost advantage does not justify an unresolved leak that can damage cabinets and flooring. Confirm the source of the leak and whether the repair includes affected seals, hoses and fittings.

Use the complete installed replacement price

Delivery, removal, a new supply line, electrical work and cabinet adjustments can materially increase the replacement path. Put the full quote into the calculator.

Operating savings include more than electricity

Newer machines may use less water and hot water. The calculator compares the annual dollar amounts you enter, so combine utility estimates when you have reliable local numbers.

Use this result as a planning range

Do not operate a leaking dishwasher or one with heat damage, exposed wiring or repeated breaker trips.
